“It might not be the first time a concept is being introduced while engaging experiential learning,” Zulick says, “but many times, it’s where mastery actually occurs.”

By contrast, 59.6% of experiential learners believed their careers were progressing as expected, and 48.8% believed that they had received adequate preparation from their educational institution.

Here are 10 examples that illustrate how experiential learning builds career skills. Depending on your program, you may have access to some—but not necessarily all—of these opportunities.
1. Graduate co-op
A graduate co-op is typically a paid, full-time, six-month work experience related to your academic program of study. You spend time working in a relevant organization, such as a nonprofit, private company, research institution, government agency, healthcare facility, or startup. Depending on the program, location and co-op format, the experience may last for an academic term or up to eight months.
Such experiences allow you to clarify your career goals and develop industry-specific technical skills, all while interacting with professionals already working in your field. In daily workflows, you can learn valuable skills like communication, time management, teamwork, and workplace judgment. You are also able to network, meet mentors, and build employer relationships, strengthening your resumé before graduation.
2. Short-term experiential projects
Standalone projects are shorter, structured assignments where you partner with businesses, nonprofits, or other sponsor organizations to create solutions for organizational challenges that are built into courses you take while at Northeastern.

“We want students to engage and find their path, so we have a buffet of all these different things,” Zulick says. “As a student, you get to choose where you want to spend your time and engagement. Every student has their unique path, but also, no one’s going to hand it to you on a platter.
“You need to engage in these places to actually have it be more meaningful,” she says. “So, it is what you make of it at the end of the day.”
