Because graduate students take a more focused approach to their education, they often rely on career resources to guide their next steps. In fact, many students enroll in graduate programs with a vision of what they want after graduation, making career services an essential tool to map out their career development. “More than 50% of our appointments are with graduate students,” says Diane Ciarletta, the director of the career design team at Northeastern.
While these services offer valuable tools and insights, Northeastern stands apart as a leader in professional development. Here are some unique features of Northeastern’s career services that can help you achieve your professional development goals.
Northeastern recognizes that every career journey is different. Its Career Design team creates customized coaching and resources that align with individual goals This team is dedicated to helping you navigate career transitions, refine job search strategies, or build confidence in your professional journey.
Graduate students can meet one-on-one with career coaches to discuss their unique professional goals. “We emphasize personalized conversations where students can talk through their career goals, whether it’s advancement or a pivot,” Ciarletta says.
Northeastern’s career development process follows a structured yet flexible framework to support your unique career journey. The model includes several key phases:
The Career Design team provides you with the latest industry insights, job search strategies, and employer expectations, helping you confidently navigate the competitive job market with confidence.
One of the most valuable aspects of career development is gaining real-world experience that directly translates to professional success. At Northeastern, experiential learning is a cornerstone of career support. So you don’t just learn in the classroom, you get to apply your skills in dynamic, hands-on settings.
“Northeastern’s brand is built on experiential learning,” Ciarletta says. “Since we have such a strong experiential learning program, with almost 4,000 employer partnerships around the world, students have a pretty robust employer network that can help in their career development.”
Beyond the well-known co-op program, Northeastern also offers other avenues for students to gain practical experience. Through the Experiential Network (XN), students work on real-world projects with industry partners. Additionally, platforms like Forage provide job simulation experiences, helping students build industry-relevant skills before they enter the workforce.
For many students, these experiences make all the difference in their job search. For example, Ciarletta shares an example of a graduate student who wanted to break into consulting and took full advantage of career coaching and experiential learning opportunities. “He was very focused and held out for what he wanted,” she says. “Through consistent coaching, mock interviews, and targeted job applications, he was able to land his dream role.”
And just like this Northeastern graduate, you can leverage these opportunities to craft a compelling career path that aligns with your goals.

Structured career coaching helps international students adapt to workplace culture, meet employer expectations, and refine their job search strategies. “A lot of international students think, ‘I don’t have a network because mine is back home,’” Ciarletta says. “We help them build one—from student organizations to networking events, we guide them on where to start and how to make connections.”
Northeastern’s Career Design team provides personalized support to help international students build strong professional foundations. The team offers guidance on resume-building, interview preparation, and leveraging Northeastern’s vast global network to connect with alumni and potential employers. Additionally, career coaches help students understand visa requirements, work authorization processes, and strategies to enhance their competitiveness in the job market.
By tapping into Northeastern’s extensive employer connections, mentorship opportunities, and career fairs, international students gain the confidence and skills needed to secure meaningful employment opportunities in the U.S. and abroad.
A strong alumni network is one of the most valuable career resources, and Northeastern ensures that students can leverage these connections long after graduation. With more than 300,000 alumni worldwide, Northeastern boasts a powerful network spanning industries, job functions, and global locations, providing graduates with access to professionals who understand the challenges and opportunities within their specific career paths.
Through Northeastern’s Career Design team, you can connect with alumni via networking events, mentorship programs, and career panels. These engagements can help you gain industry insights, establish valuable relationships, and increase your chances of securing job opportunities. Many alumni also return as guest speakers and mentors, offering firsthand knowledge of industry trends and career pathways.
By leveraging Northeastern’s vast alumni network, you can gain continued support in your career development journey, giving you ongoing access to opportunities and insights even after completing your degree.
As artificial intelligence reshapes the job market, Northeastern’s Career Design team has embraced AI-driven career tools. With the support of the university, career services at Northeastern leverage AI-powered platforms to enhance resume building, job search strategies, and interview preparation.
“Unlike many career offices, we’ve leaned into AI,” Ciarletta says. “We even hired someone focused on conversation design to help integrate AI into our approach. It’s changing how we help students develop their career narratives.”
Northeastern offers AI-driven career guidance through tools such as ChatGPT for resume optimization, LinkedIn profile enhancement, and cover letter refinement. In addition, AI-powered job simulations help students gain practical experience by mimicking real-world job tasks, allowing them to develop critical skills before entering the workforce. Moreover, students are encouraged to use AI for networking strategies, including crafting effective LinkedIn messages and preparing thoughtful questions for informational interviews.
These advancements can position you at the forefront of an AI-driven professional landscape, giving you a competitive edge in securing career opportunities in the digital age.
Even with these unique features, getting the most out of Northeastern’s career services requires motivation and hard work. “Start early and be proactive,” Ciarletta says. “I encourage students to engage with us as soon as possible.”
And more importantly, career support at Northeastern doesn’t end at graduation. “Our resources are designed to support students not just while they’re here, but for life,” Ciarletta says. “Students can always come back for career guidance—even after they’ve graduated.”
