PMHNPs assess, diagnose, provide therapy, and prescribe medications for patients who have psychiatric disorders, brain disorders, or substance abuse problems. PMHNPs can also manage patient care and provide emergency psychiatric services, psychosocial and physical assessments, and treatment plans. Employers often include behavioral health/addiction clinics, psychiatric mental health facilities, and private NP practices.

Program Experience 

The graduate program in Advanced Practice Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at Northeastern University is designed to prepare nurses to provide a broad range of mental health services. PMHNPs work with children, adolescents, adults, and families through their life spans in community mental health centers, residential programs, schools, and outpatient practice settings.

There are 2 Clinical Intensive weekends in the curriculum. One is scheduled in the first year of classes and the second one is in your last semester of your specialty track. You are required to come to campus for these Clinical Intensives and will have the opportunity to meet your faculty, participate in High Fidelity Simulation and refine your Advanced Practice Skills with professional patients and individual instruction.
