Friedrich Lohr is a faculty member in the Global Studies and International Relations program and Professor of the Practice. His research and teaching focus is on East Asian Studies, in particular, developments in North Korea, European politics and recent history, and transatlantic relations. He also presents special seminars on diplomacy and writes opinion articles for the College of Professional Studies’ website. Ambassador Lohr has lectured and participated in panels on international relations, such as Snowden and the National Security Agency, Syria and chemical weapons, the Crimean crisis, and the European Union currency crisis.
Previously, Ambassador Lohr was a Distinguished International Visiting Scholar and a Distinguished Max Kade Visitor at the University of Rhode Island, a Visiting Professor of Government at Suffolk University, and a Fellow of the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. He served as a career officer in the German diplomatic service, as Ambassador to North Korea from 2005 to 2007, and as Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) in Beijing, China, from 2002 to 2005. Ambassador Lohr has held a number of distinguished German Foreign Office posts, including Minister-Counselor at the Department of Arms Control and Disarmament; Advisor at the Policy Planning Group of the Christian Democratic Parliamentary Group at the Bundestag; and Deputy Director of European Political Affairs at the Chancellor’s Office. He has served overseas in German embassies, as Chargé d’affaires in Nigeria, as Deputy Chief of Mission in Algeria, Sudan, and Hungary, as consul in the Czech Republic, as press officer in Yugoslavia, and has also worked at the German Missions at the United Nations and the European Union. Ambassador Lohr’s last diplomatic post was as German Consul General to the New England states. He is currently a faculty member at Suffolk University.
