Learn to lead in K-12 education

Northeastern’s Master of Arts in Teaching program develops your potential as an exceptional K–12 educator who transcends traditional instruction to become a transformative educator. You’ll gain instructional techniques and new abilities to address systemic inequities and actively shape a more equitable, globally connected society.

The program aligns with Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education licensure requirements—integrating coursework, gateway tasks, pre-practicum experience, and an immersive student-teaching practicum. Graduates earn endorsement for initial teacher licensure in Massachusetts across multiple specializations.

The curriculum fosters an understanding of diverse educational needs, social contexts, and cultural perspectives.

The Master of Arts in Teaching has been approved for initial licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Specialize in one of three industry-aligned concentrations:

Elementary education: Build a deep understanding of the diverse educational needs, social concerns, and cultural values of today’s elementary and secondary schools (grades 1–6).

Secondary education: Focus your degree on the diverse educational needs, social concerns, and cultural values of secondary schools (grades 5–12 for English, history, social sciences, and political science; grades 8–12 for mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and earth/space science).

English as a second language: Gain subject-based knowledge and field experiences and fill the need for more Massachusetts teachers licensed in English as a second language (grades PreK–8 or 5–12).

  • Engage in an immersive, practice-oriented approach that takes you from passionate educator to a reflective practitioner who excels in instruction and acts as a catalyst for positive educational change.
  • Choose from elective courses covering a broad range of skills and approaches.
  • Gain foundational skill development, perspective expansion, and strengthened capacity to inspire learning.
  • Practice your skills in pre-practicum/early fieldwork observations, teaching practicum and seminars, and a full term of student teaching.
  • Earn endorsement for initial teacher licensure in Massachusetts across multiple specializations.
  • Emerge prepared to create meaningful impact within schools, communities, and students’ lives.

    • The Foreign Credential Evaluation (FCE) is a required assessment of all transcripts and documents from non-U.S. accredited post-secondary education institutions. (Review the FCE requirements by country.)

  • English language proficiency proof. Students for whom English is not their primary language must submit one of the following:

    • Official associate or bachelor's degree transcript from an accredited college or university in the U.S., stating degree conferral and date

    • TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, or NU Global Exam scores

  • Other materials may be required

For students interested in pursuing financial assistance or educational loans, additional educational costs, known as Cost of Attendance (COA) components, can be included in the calculation of aid and loan eligibility.
