That work is becoming increasingly important as urban populations grow. According to the United Nations’ 2018 World Urbanization Prospects, 55% of the world’s population lived in urban areas at that time, a share projected to reach 68% by 2050.

Urban and regional planner positions often require a master’s degree, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. BLS projections also show employment growing approximately 3% from 2024 to 2034, about as fast as the average for all occupations, with approximately 3,400 openings each year over that period.

What are the common responsibilities of urban planners?
Cities, towns, and neighborhoods each have their own unique character. One reason for these distinctions is that different municipalities are designed based on various plans. Factors such as walkability, utility systems, street networks, zoning regulations, and access to green space determine the comfort, accessibility, and environmental health of a community.

Urban planning affects how people experience daily life: how they move within their communities, what services they can access, and how resilient their communities are.
Inadequate or inequitable planning can make it harder for communities to address growth, recover from disruptions, and distribute resources effectively.
In order to design and implement healthy systems, planners have to care about people, places, and the environment all at once.
“To me, it’s about integrating our interconnected futures and really not seeing them as separate individualistic pathways,” Zellner says. “We’re all in it together. And this work allows us to see that, understand that, work with that, and create a future that hopefully is better for more of us.”
Succeeding in urban planning often involves balancing competing interests. Getting different stakeholders to cooperate—and coordinating the right resources, policies, and funding—requires negotiation, listening, and facilitation skills.
What kinds of urban planning careers can you pursue?
As an urban planning graduate, you may pursue work in government, consulting, advocacy, community development, nonprofits, transportation agencies, research organizations, engineering firms, or the private sector.
One of the most common career paths taken by graduates is urban or regional planner. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, urban and regional planners reported a median annual wage of $83,720 as of May 2024. The highest 10% earned more than $128,550.
Other potential career sectors graduates can pursue include:
- Transportation planning: Improves roads, walkways, bike paths, public transit, and other transportation systems to support access, efficiency, and safety.

You learn to collect and analyze large, complex datasets using sensor systems, public records, apps, and other tools. You may also study machine learning, geographic information systems, spatial analysis and computational modeling of complex urban problems (think networks and interactions that lead to unintended consequences of planning decisions)
If you’re interested in transportation analytics, climate data analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), civic technology, or urban data science, urban informatics may be a compatible career path. The field places greater emphasis on collecting, managing, analyzing, and communicating data, although that work may directly inform urban planning and development decisions.

How Northeastern’s MS in Urban Planning and Policy prepares students
Northeastern’s MS in Urban Planning and Policy is designed for students who want to advance planning processes, urban change, and urban transformation. They help students test ideas in multiple contexts, collaborate with partners, adapt to uncertainty, and strengthen their professional judgment. Students may also take advantage of an optional co-op to grow their skills before graduation.
Participatory participatory modeling and planning
For students who want to strengthen their systems thinking, problem-solving, facilitation, and technical modeling skills, Northeastern offers learning opportunities related to participatory planning and modeling.
Participatory modeling brings people with different forms of knowledge into a shared modeling process. By combining their perspectives into shared models, participants can develop a richer understanding of a system, examine tradeoffs, and identify strategies they may not have considered independently.
“It’s not that I’m right and you’re wrong,” Zellner says. “We’re both right, just in different ways.”
These processes can reveal why certain strategies may or may not work and support more inclusive, adaptive, and actionable decisions. For example, stakeholders may use a model to test potential responses to repeated flooding before committing major resources. When a simulation shows that an expensive strategy may not reduce risk as expected, planners and community members can examine alternatives and understand who may benefit—or face new tradeoffs—from each approach.
While optional, participatory modeling courses reflect the collaborative processes planners use to build partnerships, map the complexity of urban systems, and communicate technical information to people with different forms of expertise.
How Northeastern’s MS in Urban Informatics prepares students
Students build skills in quantitative analysis, data mining, machine learning, data visualization, GIS, spatial analysis, computational modeling, and the management of large datasets. Courses such as Big Data for Cities and modeling-focused electives can involve partnerships that let students build tools with and for outside organizations. Students can choose between three concentrations, depending on their interests:

Depending on their interests, graduates may pursue work involving urban analytics, GIS and spatial analysis, transportation and infrastructure analysis, resilience planning, civic technology, policy research, and other applications of data and computational methods to urban challenges.
