Northeastern ranks in the “highest research activity” category among U.S. colleges and universities. It is one of only 115 accorded top tier, R-1 status by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
This distinguished ranking reflects the university’s strategic investment in high-impact, use-inspired, interdisciplinary research programs, described in our visionary strategic plan, Northeastern 2025.
External research funding in 2016-2017 rose to $140.7 million. Since 2006, the university has recruited more than 600 tenured or tenure-track faculty, emphasizing joint appointments across colleges and disciplines. Northeastern has also invested in leading-edge facilities like the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex. Opened in 2017, the complex is a magnet for academic leaders and creative collaboration among faculty and with industry in areas from robotics and cybersecurity to drug discovery.
