Designed for aspiring teachers and career-changers with a strong background in their chosen content area (bachelor’s degree or equivalent), the Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education provides an understanding of the diverse educational needs, social concerns, and cultural values of secondary schools.
Upon completing this degree, which includes prepracticum/early field work observations and a full term of student teaching, you will be poised to make an impact in your school, community, and students’ lives.
The MAT+ option allows qualifying students to complete a Master of Arts in Teaching and earn either an additional license in special education or an additional license in ESL. Candidates may also plan a program of study that allows for triple licensure in consultation with the program director.
Please note: Beginning fall 2026, this program will transition from a quarter-based to a semester-based format under the new name Master of Arts in Teaching. Students enrolling before fall 2026 will receive advising support to ensure a smooth transition with no impact on academic progress or tuition.

The Master of Arts in Secondary Education (grades 8-12) has been approved for initial licensure by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in the following content areas: biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, and physics.For information on where this program will help you achieve professional licensure, please visit Northeastern’s consumer information website and review Professional Licensure Disclosure. - MAT+ option to earn an additional license: teacher of students of moderate disabilities, preK-8 or 5-12, or teacher of English as a second language, preK-8, or 5-12.
