Applied Mathematics

New applications of mathematics are constantly being discovered, and established techniques are being applied in new ways and in emerging fields. Northeastern University’s MS in Applied Mathematics program is designed to address the needs of current and aspiring applied mathematics professionals who work in sectors such as financial services and investment management, data science and high tech, computer information and software development, academia, and research.

Our program was developed by research faculty, PhD-holding teaching faculty, and industry experts to bring together academic rigor and industry needs. You’ll gain a strong advanced mathematical foundation, sharpen your problem-solving abilities, and develop your data analysis and modeling, machine learning, statistical learning, and computational skills.

Along with core courses—which include mathematical modeling, matrix analysis, probability I and II, machine learning I and II, and several statistics courses—you can take classes in graph theory, numerical analysis I and II, algorithms for optimization, optimization and complexity, and quantum computation and information. In addition, we’re always expanding our course offerings to meet both student interest and industry need.

More advanced elective courses take advantage of our department’s offerings in applied mathematics (including topological data analysis; probability and measure; Riemannian optimization; and theory of optimization) and in pure mathematics (including advanced differential equations and functional analysis; differential, algebraic, and discrete geometry and topology; and mathematical methods in quantum theory).

To support your professional goals, our program offers:

• A data science concentration: Gain solid knowledge of mathematical modeling, probability, statistics, machine learning, data analysis, and programming skills through experiential learning and co-op experiences. Some courses are conducted in collaboration with computer science and engineering departments.
• Elective options: Choose advanced coursework around a specific area of interest, pursue personalized training in applied mathematics, or strengthen your future application to PhD programs.
• An optional co-op: Gain industry experience working in one of many applied math careers during the course of your studies.
• Evening classes: Courses meet in the evenings to accommodate your busy schedule.
• A tailored curriculum: You can take up to two courses outside the mathematics department, providing the flexibility to create a curriculum tailored to your career interests.
• Weekly seminars: The Department of Mathematics is an active research department with weekly seminars in applied and pure mathematics. We bring in speakers from outside the discipline and the university to speak on cutting-edge mathematics and applications.
• Real-world experience: Some courses include in-class projects solving real-world challenges for industry clients.
