Program overview

The cutting edge of AI

The MS in Artificial Intelligence is a dynamic, interdisciplinary program that prepares students to lead innovation in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

  • Develop advanced skills in AI to design, develop, and maintain AI systems that change the world.
  • Go beyond learning AI as a tool through real-world applications of industry-aligned concentrations: machine learning, robotics and agent-based systems, computer vision, energy systems, and continuous process engineering.
  • Build experience and connections as an institutional leader in human-centric and responsible AI.
  • Hold an optional full-time paid co-op or internship with a partner company or current employer.
  • This program is jointly offered by Khoury College of Computer Sciences and the College of Engineering.

All students in the MS in AI complete foundational courses in mathematics, programming, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and ethics. You’ll then specialize through one of five concentrations, each emphasizing practical, industry-focused AI solutions and offering extensive hands-on experience.

Concentrations offered by Khoury College of Computer Sciences

  • Robotics and Agent-Based Systems Master reinforcement learning, sensing, and more to build intelligent machines that make decisions in real-time—from disaster-response robots navigating rescue missions to surgical assistants.
  • Machine Learning Design solutions for health, finance and beyond. Build models that predict hospital admissions or detect fraud. In advanced ML and natural language processing, you’ll learn to handle complex data and deploy ethical, resilient AI systems.

Concentrations offered by College of Engineering

  • Energy Systems Modernize energy infrastructure and boost sustainability with AI, from optimizing consumption in smart buildings to managing electric vehicle charging. Select from courses like Renewable Energy Development and Scientific Machine Learning.
  • Continuous Process Engineering Apply AI to industrial environments for reliability and productivity. Build models predicting failures and monitoring chemical plants. Modeling and Process Safety courses prepare you for pharma, chemical, and manufacturing.
  • Computer Vision Create AI that reads images for healthcare, self-driving cars, and more. Develop tools to inspect products or detect environmental shifts by drone. Courses in Computer Vision and Data Visualization teach scalable visual data work.
  • Full-time paid co-op or internship opportunities with partners like Amazon, Ford, Roche/Genentech, Goldman Sachs, U.S. Soccer Federation, and more
  • Access to world-class research facilities and network—including the Institute for Experiential AI, AI Ethics Advisory Board, World Economic Forum’s Global AI Action Alliance, and more—through Northeastern’s R1 status
  • Deep expertise in technical, interdisciplinary, and ethical dimensions of AI
  • Clear career paths for AI specialists, developers, researchers, and PhD candidates
  • Flexible options with a strong foundation in computer science and mathematics for those with more contextual experience who need to strengthen their foundational technical knowledge and skills

Prepare for a leadership role in AI through hands-on projects, research, and real-world challenges with corporate partners. Renowned for our co-ops and internships, Northeastern offers a fully experiential approach to AI that emphasizes collaboration between humans and machines.

Develop solutions to real-world problems, such as:

  • Speech impairment
  • Climate vulnerability
  • Disease outbreaks in healthcare
  • Biases in financial services and fintech
  • AI’s ethical use in cybersecurity

Include four to eight months of full-time paid AI work through co-ops or internships with one of our industry partners or your current employer. We offer partnerships with top tech companies, startups, nonprofits, and various companies across diverse industries.
