Biomedical Science
Master's
The Master of Science in Biomedical Science is an interdisciplinary program that focuses on the cross-disciplinary integration of human pathobiology with drug action, invention, and clinical utility.
Program overview
Advance your science career
Scientific work, whether research or clinically oriented, is increasingly interdisciplinary and demands a skill set able to deal with problems of human health across branches of science and medicine. The Master of Science in Biomedical Science, offered by the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, integrates study across several areas of contemporary biomedicine, including human physiology and pathophysiology, pharmacology, and biochemistry/cell biology.
This program is appropriate for those entering or currently employed in the field, including research technicians, clinical laboratory workers, science teachers, and science administrators. For those currently employed, program flexibility can enhance their performance in a current position or invite new employment opportunities. Graduates of the program will also be well prepared to enter related PhD programs at the university. The program is STEM certified.

- The university is strategically located within the Boston-area biomedical and pharmaceutical/biotech industry ecosystem.
- The MS program provides opportunities for original research experience in department labs and the option to do a literature- or laboratory-based master’s thesis for credit.
- The curriculum includes opportunity for laboratory coursework and instruction in experimental design and data analysis.
- Northeastern’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is consistently ranked first in NIH funding among all private U.S. schools of pharmacy.
- The program offers opportunities for experiential learning through department and off-campus co-ops and internships.
- Those already employed in pharmaceutical/biotechnology-related fields can take specific courses for advanced training.
Graduates of the biomedical science program are primarily healthcare professionals who gain basic training in human biology and disease, and go on to advancing in their current roles. Some graduates from the department have established careers as independent:
- Industry scientists and administrators (Big Pharma, biotech)
- Clinical laboratory staff members
- Academic biomedical researchers
- Science teaching faculty
- Medical liaison specialists
- Pharmaceutical product representatives
- Medical writers

Program objectives
Prepare for success
The MS in Biomedical Sciences program trains students in research methods, analysis, data, and other biomedical applications.
Students analyze current research trends in the biomedical sciences. They will learn to apply human biology and pathology to drug pharmacology, invention, and clinical application.
Students use methodology and instrumentation to increase biomedical knowledge in experiments that advance the medical application and clinical utility of drugs.
Students identify major themes, knowledge gaps, and research problems regarding the application of human biology and pathology to drug pharmacology, invention, and clinical application.
Students will recognize applications of the pharmaceutical sciences to improve healthcare outcomes and apply principles of biomedical science to facilitate drug discovery.
