Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery
Master's
The Master of Science in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery seeks to produce specialists in pharmaceutics and delivery who use their training to improve drug targeting, action, and safety.

Program overview
Lead pharmaceutical improvements
The Master of Science in Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery creates specialists who use and devise cutting-edge approaches to create and deliver treatments. You’ll improve your understanding of how the chemical and physical properties of drugs and their dosage forms affect therapeutic performance in healthy and diseased systems.
You may elect to concentrate on courses focused on novel drug delivery systems, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, physical pharmacy and polymeric dosage form development, or drug metabolism.
With a strong focus on nanotechnology-based advanced delivery systems that address contemporary needs, these concentrations give you the opportunity to study with some of the world’s top researchers.
You’ll also be well prepared to enter related PhD programs at the university. The program is STEM certified.

- The University is strategically located within the Boston-area biomedical and pharmaceutical/biotech-industry ecosystem.
- The MS program provides opportunities for original research experience in department labs, and the option to do a literature or laboratory-based master’s thesis for credit.
- Northeastern’s School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is consistently ranked first in NIH funding among all private U.S. schools of pharmacy.
- The program offers opportunities for experiential learning through Departmental and off-campus co-ops and internships.
- Faculty includes industry-practiced scientists in drug discovery.
- Those already employed in pharmaceutical/biotechnology careers can take specific courses for advanced training.
Graduates of the Pharmaceutics and Drug Delivery program work in labs designing and applying ways to deliver drugs to increase their efficacy and reduce toxicity. Some graduates from the department have established careers as independent:
- Industry scientists and administrators (Big Pharma, biotech)
- Clinical laboratory staff
- Academic biomedical researchers
- Science teaching faculty
- Medical liaison specialists
- Pharmaceutical product representatives
- Medical writers

Program objectives
Prepare for success
Evaluate critical topics
Evaluate critical topics of contemporary focus in pharmacology, including current trends and cross-disciplinary knowledge about drugs and their actions in living systems, and produce literature reviews of current topics.
Execute laboratory experiments by using methodology and instrumentation for drug profiling, applying experimental techniques to improve pharmacological knowledge, maintaining and using data.
Identify themes, knowledge gaps, and research problems regarding drug action, profiling, and application and effectively communicate them, and judge social, economic, and ethical impacts, and recognize unsatisfied medical needs.
Improve outcomes by using principles of pharmaceutics and drug delivery to facilitate drug knowledge and discovery, and predict where pharmaceutical information is needed to improve treatments.
