As a Master of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering student, you have the flexibility to specialize in an area of interest with seven concentrations, research areas, and experiential learning options.
Research ranges from the design, analysis, and optimization of high-performance computing systems to the fabrication of cutting-edge microelectromechanical actuators to new research frontiers on smart power grids, metamaterials, biomedical signal processing, and communication systems.
Located in Boston, a hub of high tech, biotech, and academia, the department has strong ties to local industry and world-famous hospitals and medical centers, is involved in many joint research projects with them and others across the nation, and has significant government-funded research.

Specialize in one of seven industry-aligned concentrations:
Communications, Control, and Signal Processing
This concentration develops methods and algorithms for communications, control, and signal processing, preparing students for careers in wireless and mobile communications, robotics, image and medical imaging, and navigation/localization industries.
Computer Systems and Software
This concentration prepares students for careers in microprocessor design, verification, embedded hardware/software, performance analysis, advanced system design, and operating systems.
Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Algorithms
Students gain expertise in computer vision, machine learning, AI, pattern recognition, big data analytics, and visualization, leading to careers in vision/image processing, data mining, visualization software, and algorithmic problem-solving.
Electromagnetics, Plasma, and Optics
Focusing on electromagnetic, acoustic, and optical wave theory and applications, this concentration leads to careers in antenna engineering, wireless systems, radar, sonar, optics, photonics, imaging, and magnetics.
Hardware and Software for Machine Intelligence
Bridging theory, software, and hardware, this AI-focused concentration prepares students for careers designing and implementing intelligent systems that integrate artificial intelligence with advanced technology solutions.
Microsystems, Materials, and Devices
Students study design, fabrication, and measurement techniques for electronic components, preparing for careers in VLSI, ASIC design, MEMS, smart material innovation, and device engineering.
Power Systems
Students explore electric transmission, distribution, power converters, and renewable energy systems, pursuing careers in smart grids, power modeling, electric vehicles, and clean energy industries.
- The MS in Electrical & Computer Engineering can be combined with a Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate
- Faculty are experienced researchers with federally funded research awards from the National Science Foundation, Office of Naval Research, Department of Homeland Security, and other government agencies. The department also has strong ties to industry with many joint research projects.
- Faculty hold numerous young investigator awards and professional society fellowships. Several faculty members have commercialized inventions from research done in Northeastern labs.

Prepare for success
You will receive deep fundamental and practical knowledge in the various disciplines of electrical and computer engineering through a strong curriculum and research opportunities.
You’ll have the opportunity to participate in Northeastern’s cooperative education (co-op) program, gaining up to eight months of professional work experience as part of the academic curriculum.
Our program is affiliated with more than ten research centers and institutes such as the Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, the Institute for Experiential Robotics, and more.
