The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering prepares you for advanced practice or master’s-level thesis research. Students with assistantships are required to complete a thesis. Other students may elect either the thesis or nonthesis option. All coursework must have the approval of the academic advisor.

You may pursue the MS in Mechanical Engineering without a concentration or choose one of the following concentrations:
- Material science
- Mechanics and design
- Thermofluids
- Mechatronics
- Choose the general mechanical engineering curriculum or select from four concentrations.
- Accomplished faculty hold numerous national recognitions and professional society awards.
- Northeastern’s location in Boston affords a vast number of collaborations with other nearby academic institutions, hospital facilities, and tech firms.
- Northeastern has 12 department research themes and annual federal funding.
- Northeastern is an R1 (top-tier) research institution.
- Students have the opportunity to participate in Northeastern’s leading cooperative education program to gain up to eight months of professional experience.
- The Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering can be combined with a graduate certificate from the College of Engineering or the Gordon Engineering Leadership certificate.
