Every day hundreds of millions of people take photos, make videos, and send texts. Across the globe, businesses collect data on consumer preferences, purchases, and trends. Governments regularly collect all sorts of data from census data to incident reports in police departments.
Research shows that more than 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created each day, and this deluge of data is growing fast. In fact, it’s estimated that, by 2020, 1.7MB of data will be created every second for every person on earth.
