Employers in AI-adjacent fields—tech, healthcare, finance, manufacturing—are looking for evidence of adaptability and collaboration. The rapid evolution of tools like generative AI has underscored how quickly today’s “newest skill” becomes table stakes.
That’s why effective AI education emphasizes fundamentals that endure: math, programming, and critical thinking. As Lino Coria Mendoza, program director for Northeastern University’s MS in AI program, explains: “Everything that I’m teaching right now—that is applications and new technology and new algorithms—I didn’t learn at school because it’s so new. What I did learn from school is this core knowledge of good programming skills, strong linear algebra, and statistical probability analysis.”
Coria Mendoza’s point speaks to a broader industry truth: technical skills are perishable, but foundational understanding is renewable. Graduates who can reason through algorithms, troubleshoot system behavior, and communicate design decisions become the professionals companies can trust with mission-critical AI projects.
That foundational rigor underpins graduate AI programs designed for long-term relevance. Some pathways emphasize deep technical development, others focus on applied implementation and leadership, while still others offer structured entry points for professionals transitioning into AI or seeking to build skills incrementally.

Coria Mendoza describes how this mindset shaped course design across Northeastern’s AI curriculum: “I created a class that I wish I had in my master’s degree [program]…I touch on the math, and then I say, ‘This is how you code it,’ and it’s not straightforward. It’s not just turning multiplications into code, because there’s a bunch of issues.”
“So you have to think of different ways to turn the math into code,” he continues. “And then there’s a little bit of data science…meaning looking at a bunch of data, getting a summary out of this data, and cleaning the data.”
Teaching students to translate mathematical concepts into working systems—while accounting for data quality, performance limitations, and real-world constraints—builds both technical fluency and professional confidence.

Across industries, issues concerning responsible AI are no longer secondary considerations. Rather, they have migrated from the periphery all the way to the boardroom, where industry leaders are tightening regulations so as to mitigate reputational and legal risks if AI systems misfire.
As Coria Mendoza notes, many technically strong students underestimate how central ethics has become: “They love coding. They love building solutions, and they think ethics is a soft skill…But I was talking to a top person at Microsoft—a very senior person—and he explained how it’s crucial to every product that they build. They need to comply because they’re government regulations and whatever country they’re working in, they need to make sure that they’re following the rules on how the data is collected and who has access to that data.”
As an example, within all of Northeastern’s AI graduate programs, responsible AI is not treated as a standalone topic. Instead, ethical considerations are embedded into project work—asking students to evaluate data provenance, user impact, bias mitigation, and the broader implications of automation.

This integrated approach mirrors how the industry often handles AI governance. Teams don’t build a system and then call ethics in at the end. Instead, they build with governance in mind from the start.
Programs such as the MPS in Applied AI emphasize responsible AI adoption at scale, including how to evaluate vendors, ensure transparency, and communicate risk to organizational leaders, while the AI Applications Certificate introduces professionals from non-technical backgrounds to ethical design thinking, ensuring those leading AI initiatives understand both their potential and their limits.
Few topics generate more discussion among employers than machine learning operations (MLOps). Industry surveys suggest many AI initiatives fail to reach production, often due to weak monitoring or deployment processes.
Coria Mendoza emphasizes why every AI professional needs at least a working grasp of MLOps principles: “The job isn’t done when you train a model. You have to review how it behaves in real life, update it safely, and keep it working for real customers.”
Within Northeastern’s AI graduate offerings, MLOps concepts are embedded through interdisciplinary coursework and electives in select programs, exposing students to version control, containerization, automated retraining, and data pipeline management. Across AI pathways, learners are encouraged to think beyond model training and consider the systems that sustain AI in production.
Employers increasingly look for these capabilities because production AI environments are dynamic: data drifts, APIs change, users behave unpredictably. As such, professionals who can anticipate these realities can oftentimes save companies both time and money.
Technical expertise will open the door, but for many professionals, it will be their communication skills that keep it open. In AI roles especially, success depends on the ability to translate complex ideas into language that executives, policymakers, and end-users can understand.
Coria Mendoza stresses that this skill often determines who advances within an organization: “[Professionals] need to be able to explain things to their peers, but also to people that have no understanding of their field. People should be able to understand what they’re doing.”
“I tell [my students] how in this industry, [communication] was a great skill I had to develop,” he continues. “Not everybody understood what I wanted to do. You want the resources, you want the time to build something, so you have to explain why this is important, why it’s going to take this long, and more.”
