Making Great Strides: Vrushali Patil Shares Her Experience

Student & Alumni Stories Engineering

Vrushali Patil, a graduate student in Northeastern University’s Master of Science Telecommunications Networks, shares her graduate student experience. Read on to learn why she chose Northeastern and how it shaped her future.

From India to Boston

Vrushali PatilWhile earning her bachelor’s degree in India, Vrushali took courses in electronics and computer networks that piqued her curiosity. After taking these classes, she knew what career path she wanted to pursue. To stand out in today’s competitive world, however, she knew she needed an edge.

“I decided to pursue a master’s in telecommunication networks at Northeastern because of the co-op experience—it bridges the real world with academic rigor. It’s been truly an amazing experience.”

In the beginning, Vrushali says, the transition to America was difficult. She went from living a self-described “comfortable life in India” to having to learn self-reliance—an experience she says she’s now grateful for.

She gives much of the credit to her professors and co-op advisors for helping her with her success. “They contributed a lot to my development by providing me with the right guidance and helping to bring out the best version of me.”

It wasn’t only the faculty and advisors that made her transition a smooth one. She describes the entire Northeastern community as kind, friendly, and an extremely tight-knit group of motivated students.

The Northeastern Difference

Before coming to the U.S., Vrushali says she didn’t have any work experience. And although finding the right co-op opportunity was challenging, she secured a six-month co-op at Next Step Innovation, working as a network engineer. “It was a great learning experience. I discovered new strengths, grew my professional network, and seasoned professionals mentored me.”

She says that this type of experiential learning opportunity, along with the first-class academic courses offered are what initially drew her to the university. While at Northeastern, Vrushali was also able to take courses in computer science and cloud computing, which helped align her interests and career aspirations.

Future Plans

After graduation, Vrushali plans to keep the doors to higher education open but is eager to make her mark in her field. Her message to students who want to explore their passions is simple.

“Northeastern has so many programs to choose from, and you’ll learn a lot and experience so much. And the courses align with the fastest growing industry and with your career and personal goals—making it truly a university like no other.”
